( it's a bit of a loaded question, to be fair, and not really one that you would normally ask over text... but the distance gives her some courage. there's less risk of being caught disappointed if no one can see her reaction to whatever the response may be, after all, and it gives a little extra time to figure out a message in reply. )

( what did she know? that they cared about each other, that they enjoyed each other's company, that he made her feel wanted and desired and appreciated and special, in a way she hadn't expected. but exclusivity or a lack thereof hadn't been discussed so much as stepped around delicately — he knew she'd seen baby, as casually as that had been. and knew that it was over; she knew, too, of his brief history with a girl from home, but nothing beyond it. she'd never assumed he'd been alone save for their time together. why should she? )

( because it sounds like that's what he's describing. dating, as in dating, a consistent state of relationship rather than occasional individual dates, something categorized and agreed upon, something that could be referred to with some form of confidence.
